The Essence of Being Human

Nelson Mandela is in hospital. He is 92 years old. This is his phylosophy

Here is the ubuntu philosophy he extols.

“It is the essence of being human. It speaks of the fact that my humanity is caught up and is inextricably bound up in yours. I am human because I belong. It speaks about wholeness, it speaks about compassion.”A person with Ubuntu is welcoming, hospitable, warm and generous, willing to share. Such people are open and available to others, willing to be vulnerable, affirming of others, do not feel threatened that others are able and good, for they have a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that they belong in a greater whole. They know that they are diminished when others are humiliated, diminished when others are oppressed, diminished when others are treated as if they were less than who they are. The quality of Ubuntu gives people resilience, enabling them to survive and emerge still human despite all efforts to dehumanize them."

This should be written in the sky across Amerika. Maybe it would help negate all of the naked hate that has gripped this country of late.

Ya Think?

This is about as clear and easy to understand as it can be, but please read the entire article.

The article below is completely neutral, not anti republican or democrat.

Charlie Reese, a retired reporter for the Orlando Sentinel has hit the nail directly on the head, defining clearly who it is that in the final analysis must assume responsibility for the judgments made that impact each one of us every day.
It's a short but good read. Worth the time. Worth remembering!

545 vs. 300,000,000

EVERY CITIZEN NEEDS TO READ THIS AND THINK ABOUT WHAT THIS JOURNALIST HAS SCRIPTED IN THIS MESSAGE. READ IT AND THEN REALLY THINK ABOUT OUR CURRENT POLITICAL DEBACLE.

Charley Reese has been a journalist for 49 years.

545 PEOPLE -- By Charlie Reese

Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.

Have you ever wondered, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, WHY do we have deficits?

Have you ever wondered, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, WHY do we have inflation and high taxes?

You and I don't propose a federal budget. The president does.

You and I don't have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of Representatives does.

You and I don't write the tax code, Congress does.

You and I don't set fiscal policy, Congress does.

You and I don't control monetary policy, the Federal Reserve Bank does.

One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one president, and nine Supreme Court justices equates to 545 human beings out of the 300 million are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.

I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank.

I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman, or a president to do one cotton-picking thing. I don't care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The politician has the power to accept or reject it. No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator's responsibility to determine how he votes.

Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party.

What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall. No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President for creating deficits.... . The president can only propose a budget. He cannot force the Congress to accept it.

The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes. Who is the speaker of the House? Nancy Pelosi. She is the leader of the majority party. She and fellow House members, not the president, can approve any budget they want. If the president vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to.

It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million can not replace
545 people who stand convicted -- by present facts -- of incompetence and irresponsibility. I can't think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people. When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist.

If the tax code is unfair, it's because they want it unfair.

If the budget is in the red, it's because they want it in the red ..

If the Army & Marines are in IRAQ , it's because they want them in IRAQ If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it's because they want it that way.

There are no insoluble government problems.

Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power. Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like "the economy," "inflation," or "politics" that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do.

Those 545 people, and they alone, are responsible.

They, and they alone, have the power..

They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses.

Provided the voters have the gumption to manage their own employees...

We should vote all of them out of office and clean up their mess!

Kinda Makes You Go Hmmmmmm?

To all of you who are constantly wondering why so many Black men are in jail, read the following clue.

CHICAGO (AP) -- Decades after young black men in Chicago first began claiming that a white policeman shocked, burned and suffocated them to get confessions, former officer Jon Burge is headed to federal prison.

He goes to serve to 4½ years behind bars not as the decorated, tough detective who rose quickly in the department, but as a cancer patient with a drinking problem who is, by his own admission, broken. His name has become synonymous with out-of-control police in the country's third-largest city.

U.S. District Judge Joan Lefkow sentenced Burge on Friday, bringing an end to an ugly chapter in the city's racially charged history after he was convicted last summer of lying about the torture of suspects.

Dozens of people -- almost all of them black men -- claimed for decades that Burge and his officers tortured them into confessing to crimes ranging from armed robbery to murder.

While Burge's attorneys had asked for a lesser sentence, several victims and their supporters said Burge's punishment wasn't nearly harsh enough.

"It's outrageous," said Mark Clements, who claims Burge's officers tortured him into giving a false confession in 1981 when he was 16. Tears ran down his face and his voice rose in anger. "It's not justice."

Burge's victims say he is part of the reason they and others fear the police. It was decades before anyone in power in Chicago believed the stories that activists say were common knowledge in the city's poorest neighborhoods.

U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald, whose office prosecuted Burge, acknowledged that it took too long for him to be tried and convicted.

"Justice delayed isn't justice completely denied," Fitzgerald said.

But community activist Fred Hampton Jr. said the sentence was disproportionately low compared to what others receive for lesser crimes.

"People in our community get more time than this for fistfights," said Hampton, whose father was a Black Panther leader killed by police before the Burge era.

Lefkow said the sentence reflected the seriousness of the allegations and, in making her decision, she wondered why an officer so admired by his department would resort to such violence.

"My best guess is ambition," Lefkow said. "Perhaps the praise, the publicity and the commendations . . . were seductive and led you down this path."

Burge has never faced criminal charges for abuse. He was charged with two counts of obstruction of justice and one count of perjury for lying when he testified in a civil lawsuit brought by Madison Hobley, who was sentenced to death for a 1987 fire that killed seven people, including his wife and son.

Then-Gov. George Ryan pardoned Hobley just before the governor emptied death row -- and cited the Burge allegations for doubting some convictions.

Hobley claimed detectives put a plastic typewriter cover over his head to make it impossible for him to breathe. Burge denied knowing about the "bagging" or taking part in it. The indictment against Burge never said Hobley was tortured but accused Burge of lying about participating in or knowing about torture that took place under his watch.

Hobley's sister broke down in tears Friday as she testified about the effect her brother's case had on their family. Robin Hobley looked directly at Burge and, with her voice breaking, said: "You put us through 16 years of torment . . . of people believing my brother was a murderer, and he wasn't. You have no idea what you did to our family."

While Burge denied during his five-week trial that torture took place, Lefkow noted the jury hadn't believed him. In considering a sentence, Lefkow told Burge she took into account his "unwillingness to acknowledge the truth in the face of all the evidence."

Burge stood facing Lefkow as she read the sentence. Her offer to let him sit given his poor heath drew groans from the victims and courtroom observers, who otherwise sat rapt as the judge spoke. As Lefkow talked about victims' testimony that she'd found particularly moving, Burge's sister-in-law stormed out of the courtroom.

Earlier Friday, Burge told the judge he knew his case brought the police department into disrepute and "for that, I am deeply sorry." He insisted he wasn't the person who's been "vilified" by the media but didn't specifically address the allegations of torture and abuse.

"I'm 63 years old, and while I try to keep a proud face, in reality, I am a broken man," he then said, his voice falling and seeming to crack with emotion.

Burge has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, congestive heart failure and a host of other maladies. His attorneys also disclosed in court Friday that he has a "drinking problem," and they requested that alcohol treatment be part of his three-year supervised release after his sentence. Lefkow agreed, and also said she'd recommend that Burge be sentenced to a federal facility near his Florida home.

Burge does not have to report for prison until March 16. He did not speak to reporters after the hearing and was taken out an entrance not accessible to reporters or the general public for security reasons, said defense attorney Richard Beuke.

After court, Beuke said that his client, who was fired in 1993 for mistreating a suspect, didn't mean to express remorse in his statement or suggest he did anything wrong. Beuke blamed what he called cop killers, murderers and rapists for the allegations that dogged Burge for years. He said Burge plans to appeal the sentence.

"I don't think a day in jail for Jon Burge is just," he attorney said.

"I Don't Need To Improve My Communication"

Whoever thinks that they do not need to improve their communication ought to be spanked by every person they have ever encountered. They should be forced to swim to antartica in some speedos or a bikini.

There is something about improving your communication skills that people see as unnecessary and stupid. They have a narrow focus of what can be learnt and what they already know.

The two prime suspects in thinking that you don't need to improve your communication is the false impression that you already communicate well and it's a stupid skill to learn. Do you honestly think you are a good communicator? I'd be happy to bet hundred dollars for each person who reads this that they are not a good communicator. I'd be filthy rich.

If you're so good at communicating, are you 99% confident in any family members' or friends' ability to talk to you about the most difficult, complex, time-consuming, scary, uncertain, and nervous topics? Errr no. It is rare in society for people to discuss what really matters. Things like sensitivity and emotional disclosure.

But guess what? You're more then this. By reading this today, it shows you have the willingness to explore communication. You know your life can be better with these learned skills. You've picked yourself off the ground after being hammered by the world's perception of . Your dancing on your feet and ready to start the fight back.

All you need now is to learn the skills too build your repertoire and practice them, then you'll be primed and ready to win any communications battle. posted by Joshua Uebergang at 12:25 AM

Motivation and Procrastination

Procrastination is the state of mind you are in when you have the intention to do something but you do nothing. It is evil. It is the primary reason why so many people fail with improving their relationships or any goal in general. I'm not just talking about sitting at your desk dreaming and not achieving anything. I'm talking about anything.

When procrastinating, you intend to do something but you're waiting. You want the task to happen but you lack the willingness and motivation to go do it. You are waiting for the motivation to come so you just carry on with your procrastinating and 1 hour later realise that you've achieved nothing. You then become frustrated and angry.

How do you stop procrastinating? I don't think you are going to like this but I'm going to tell you the truth. You will only do by doing. Now how powerful is that statement?

You as an Earthling have a free will. You've got the power to choose what you want. Make it your choice "to do" and act on the desire to have great relationships. Stop waiting and wishing you had better relationships. You will get the motivation to take action by doing.

This is the secret great writers use. Beginners sit infront of the computer or notepad waiting for an idea while great writers just start writing. They don't wait for the motivation or a great idea to hit them, they just get started by writing anything on paper.

To find the motivation to do, start doing! posted by Joshua Uebergang at 2:52 PM

The Top 100 Most Hated People

A national Australian magazine recently announced . These strange surveys are conducted in many different areas such as on sports stars and actors and are in many different countries.

My only thought as to why these type of surveys are done is for a good laugh. Well, this particular survey certainly did that to me.

I'm sorry I couldn't find the official list I'm referring to. However, I found one that's worldwide for your pleasure:
http://www.hat.net/pop/lists.top_people/most_hated_people/

Among the most hated was the Sting Ray that killed Steve Irwin.

What I want you to know is the US President George W. Bush and the Pope, were more hated then Osama Bin Laden! This has probably left Osama very disappointed. The guy tries his hardest to like threaten the world, while the Pope is promoting wonderful things like world peace and yet Osama is more liked.

Why do you think this is so?

The answer ties very nicely in the recent post I made about Steve Irwin's death and in another post about "perceptual blindness" in the managing conflict email I also sent.

Steve's personality made him so visible to us. He was in a position of power even though no position was "officially" assigned to him. This is otherwise known as referent power where you create power for yourself based on charismatic and inspirational like skills. Other people look-up to you and follow you.

President Bush has a position of power that was assigned to him giving him a place in our lives.

Osama Bin Laden created power for himself through devastation and instilling fear in people.

If these positions of power are true, then why is Osama more liked then someone like President Bush or the Pope?

Referring directly from the perceptually blind post:"Your perception is your understanding of what you see and hear. This means your perceptions are different to others as your understanding differs from theirs.

Perceptions can be nasty little things. What they do is filter out things in what we see and hear. Something may occur, but it does not reach our minds because it was 'filtered' out...

It's very similar to panning for gold except you're not looking for the gold.

You filter out the good (the gold) and let in the dirt with what we see in situations and others. We love to judge, analyze, and criticize others so we perceive the dirt in others."The Pope has his interests in developing goodness in the world but the voters in the survey didn't see this! They were "perceptually blind" and ignored this.

Oh, by the way I didn't vote ;-)

Guess why he was hated? The voting Aussies hated him because he was too conservative and boring! Come on! According to the survey, this is a more awful characteristic then killing people. Talk about "perceptually blind!"

This just proves how powerful our perceptions are in how we see people.

Your co-workers, friends, family, children, and partner are all judged with this awful and natural human measurement. For this reason, I want you to stop judging people.

I'm currently writing an ebook about the most common communication problems and in it I thoroughly explain judging and how it is one of the biggest barriers to interpersonal communication.

I'll leave you with a powerful quote I use in the ebook: "Assumptions are the termites of relationships." - Henry Winkler

Have a great week with no judging! posted by Joshua Uebergang at 10:37 AM

People are always on the lookout for good conversationalists. You might not think yourself as a very eloquent person; but by asking excellent conversation questions, no one will be the wise.

Excellent conversation questions keep the energy going. Without it, there will only be awkward silence - something you do not really want to experience. To help give you some ideas on what to ask, here are some examples.

1) Where are you from?

Asking about a person's hometown makes for an excellent conversation question because it leads to all sorts of ideas and speculations.

You have a lot of opportunities to ask follow-up questions about the hometown and its attractions. If you have a relative living around the area, you can bring it up during the conversation as well.

2) What is your favorite film of all time?

Asking this question allows you to share your own favorite films. It's always easier to talk about things which are not serious and are truly of your interest. From movies, you can also move on to other related issues like celebrities or literature.

3) Have you heard about...?

A good conversationalist is always updated on current events. If you wish to have excellent conversation questions readily available, then brush up on politics and entertainment. These are the two branches which capture the most attention. Having an opinion doesn't hurt either.

4) Do you know...?

Asking about mutual friends also helps people warm up to you. Of course, make sure you ask about mutual friends in a polite and friendly manner. No reason to scare the person into thinking that you're targeting one of his or her friends.

5) Where did you get that?

If the person you're talking to has something interesting on his or her arm or is wearing an accessory, then you're in luck. Another one of many excellent conversation questions is asking about what a person is wearing, holding or using. Showing interest in what they have helps make the conversation warmer and more interesting.

Arguments, Fights, and Most Types of Conflict Start Because...

We are blind.
I'm not talking about being physically blind but something called "perceptually blind".
We all have perceptions. Your perception is your understanding of what you see and hear. This means your perceptions are different to others as your understanding differs from theirs.
Perceptions can be nasty little things. What they do is filter out things in what we see and hear. Something may occur, but it does not reach our minds because it was "filtered" out.
One characteristic that is known to do this is your beliefs. If you believe that all females are shopping, money-spending, resource consuming monsters (hehe sorry girls!), then every time you see a female shopping you'll think "Bah! Typical money-wasting girls!" Your belief that females will spend as much money as they can blinds you from other possibilities that they maybe shopping for their first time all month.
